They were not his army. They were what remained when a kingdom stopped deserving one.

General Alastair, once the crown’s crimson lion and now marked by it like a target, leads a broken column east: veterans who have scraped the king’s crest from their shields, debtors, deserters, women with children under cloaks too thin for the night. Ahead lies the Greywood, where no one camps and nobody remembers why. Beyond it, a river, a bridge with old rights in it, and a city that has outlived every kingdom that claimed to own it.

At the general’s shoulder rides Patrick. He counts things. Lamps, debts, men, the exact weight of a silence. Trained twenty years for a world of terms and leverage, he keeps a private ledger in which every person he meets receives a classification, until the city of Orenthal begins, quietly, to classify him.

Because Orenthal is not a fortress, whatever the crowns believe. It is an office. It cannot be taken, only held. It chooses what holds it.

And far beneath its deepest ring, behind a door that has declined five eras of worthy and unworthy hands alike, something bound before the counting of eras is attending. It has learned the one thing a cage can teach:

What is truly yours returns by itself.
Or it was never holding you at all.
